On 20 January Donald Trump will be sworn in as 45th President of the United States. It is very important for Germany how the trade relations between the USA and the EU will develop in the future. In an interview shortly before his inauguration Trump informed German car manufacturers that he intended to impose import duties on German cars.
In 2015 the United States were Germanys most important trading partner. Goods to the total value of 174.0 billion euros were traded between the two countries. Exports to the United States totalled 113.7 billion euros, with the main German export goods being motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (34.1 billion euros).
In 2015, Germany exported motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers to the value of 226.7 billion euros worldwide. The United States ranked first on the list of major purchasing countries not only for exports in general but also for this product group (15%). They were followed by the United Kingdom (13%) and the Peoples Republic of China (8%).
